Youthful Trait #5 - Innovation

Staying vibrant and energetic is as much about your mindset as it is about the physical condition you’re in.

But have you ever stopped to think what EXACTLY it means to have an attitude or energy of youthfulness?

There are 7 characteristics of a Youthful Mindset. The more you can develop each of these characteristics, the more vibrant, energetic, fulfilled and happy you will feel.

In previous episodes, I’ve shared the first 4 traits and those are – Optimism, Curiosity, Openness and Creativity.

Today, I’m sharing trait #5, and that’s Innovation.

Innovation, in this sense, simply means that you’re consistently seeking new and better ways to do things. Innovation, combined with Optimism, is the key to every quality of life improvement we’ve ever had.

It’s been defined as the “successful exploitation of new ideas”.

It’s more than just coming up with the new idea; Innovation requires practical application of the idea.

So I...

Youthful Trait #4 - Creativity

Staying vibrant and energetic is as much about your mindset as it is about the physical condition you’re in.

But have you ever stopped to think what EXACTLY it means to have an attitude or energy of youthfulness?

There are 7 characteristics of a Youthful Mindset. The more you can develop each of these characteristics, the more vibrant, energetic, fulfilled and happy you will feel.

In previous episodes, I’ve shared the first three traits and those are – Optimism, Curiosity and Openness.

Today, I’m sharing trait #4, and that’s Creativity.

I shared in an earlier episode this quote from Sophia Loren. She said, “There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”

I love how Sophia Loren, clearly a role model for remaining charismatic and vivacious regardless of age, points out the connection...

Youthful Trait #3 - Openness

Uncategorized Jul 31, 2021

In a previous blog post, I shared my framework for a Youthful Mindset. A youthful mindset will keep you feeling young and vibrant, no matter your age.

There are 7 characteristics of a Youthful Mindset, and in this and the next few episodes, I’m diving deeper into each of them, one characteristic at a time.

Today, we’re talking about Trait #3 of a youthful mindset – and that’s Openness.

Yesterday we talked about the 2nd characteristic of a youthful mindset and that was Curiosity.

Where curiosity is a desire to learn, openness is the realization that you never know where the answer will come from, or what it will be when you discover it. It is a sense of Wonder about the world and about life. A sense that life holds innumerable mysteries and that you can’t wait to see what it reveals to you next.

Openness is also the understanding that, while you know what you know right now, you’re open to the idea that new information may come along that makes you...

Youthful Trait #2 - Curiosity

In an earlier blog post, I shared my framework for a Youthful Mindset. A youthful mindset will keep you feeling young and vibrant, no matter your age.

There are 7 characteristics of a Youthful Mindset, and in the next few episodes, I’m diving deeper into each of them, one trait at a time.

Today, we’re talking about Trait #2 of a youthful mindset – and that’s Curiosity.

Curiosity has gotten a bad rap – as in being “nosy”, or wanting to know things that don’t concern you.

Or even being dangerous… who hasn’t heard the phrase “curiosity killed the cat”?

But curiosity, in its truest sense, is healthy and vital to staying young at heart.

Think about it – Curiosity is a desire to learn, a desire to grow, to get answers to questions, or to figure out solutions to problems.

If you think of the alternative – a lack of desire to learn or grow – it’s easy to see how Curiosity fits perfectly with a...

Optimism

Uncategorized Jul 24, 2021

In the last episode, I shared my framework for a Youthful Mindset. A youthful mindset will keep you feeling young and vibrant, no matter your age.

In the next few episodes, I’m going to dive a little deeper into each of the 7 characteristics, and today, we’re talking about Trait #1 of a youthful mindset – and that’s Optimism

As a general definition, Optimism is the belief that the outcome of events or experiences will be positive. It’s also defined as a way or a STYLYE that people understand or explain the events that happen in their life

This STYLE has 3 potential components to it:

  1. optimistic people tend to see negative events as temporary, where pessimists explain negative events as more permanent. So Someone who’s optimistic can more easily see the possibility of change, whereas pessimists tend to think things are unchangeable and will ALWAYS be the way they are.

  1. optimists tend to see negative events as more limited or...

A Youthful Mindset

Uncategorized Jul 22, 2021

Staying vibrant and energetic is as much about your mindset as it is about the physical condition you’re in.

But have you ever stopped to think what EXACTLY it means to have an attitude or energy of youthfulness?

Today, I’m sharing my framework for a youthful mindset, so that you can begin to not only understand it, but more importantly, be mindful of and intentional about developing your own youthful energy.

There are 7 characteristics of a Youthful Mindset. The more you can develop each of these characteristics, the more vibrant, energetic and excited you will feel.

The first characteristic is Optimism.

The stereotype of a grouchy old person is rooted in reality. It is often the lack of optimism for the future that starts a person down the path to becoming generally grouchy or unpleasant to be around.

Even a young person, who expresses nothing but pessimism, comes across as old and tired and worn out by life. In other words, pessimism is the gateway attitude to...

"When I Grow Up"

Uncategorized Jul 17, 2021

When my boys were younger, and I was in the heyday of my fulltime mom years, I drove an SUV. A huge 7-seater Suburban. And I put about 30,000 miles a year on that thing, carting my kids and their friends and all their gear to football and wrestling and taekwondo and band events.

Now that they’re either out on their own or off at University, and my daughter is the only one still at home, I drive a manual 6-speed, 427       horsepower Camaro.

And I LOVE it!

I was dropping off my daughter at school one morning, and one of the teachers was at the door greeting the kids as they walked in. She leaned down and said to me, “I want a car like this when I grow up.”

We both laughed because she’s about my age, maybe in her 50’s

And I told her “Me, too!”, meaning I’ve got the car, but I haven’t grown up yet.

As I drove away that morning, I kept thinking about her comment, and how it was really apropos to the work...

Triggers, The Next Evolution

Uncategorized Jul 15, 2021

Last week I talked about triggers and how they can be used as an opportunity to improve your emotional well-being.

In this episode, I’m sharing the next evolution, if you will, in that trigger process.

So first, let me recap the example I shared in last week’s episode:

Let’s say that someone cuts you off in traffic and it instantly annoys or angers you.

Without you even being fully conscious of it, your brain has just instantaneously run through a series of thoughts that caused you to feel annoyance or anger.

Odds are good that the final thought or two led back to an area of your life where you’re allowing yourself to feel victimized in some small way.

Examples might be:

  • Letting your boss take advantage of you,
  • Or not speaking up when your mother-in-law disrespects you

The point is that, if someone else’s crappy or thoughtless driving habits have the power to induce anger or annoyance, then there is some connection that your brain has made in order to...

Triggers! And Why to Celebrate Them!

Uncategorized Jul 10, 2021

Today, we’re talking TRIGGERS! – what they are, and why you should celebrate them!

You may have heard someone express annoyance, frustration, disappointment or angst lately using the term “triggered”.

Like, “uhh, my boss triggers me”, or “that tv commercial triggers me”.

It’s becoming a popular way to express the idea that a person, thing, or event has stirred up a negative emotion.

It’s becoming popular, because it’s a really effective metaphor!

I mean, you can see it, can’t you?

The perpetrator or the cause of the trigger says or does something, and the other person has an instant, almost reflexive response to it. Instant anger, instant annoyance, instant disgust.

The one using this term often refers to the cause of the trigger as something to be avoided in the future, like “I don’t want to be around that person, she triggers me.”

So first, let’s get into the nuts and bolts of...

Bring More Joy Into Your Life!

Uncategorized Jul 08, 2021

Today we’re talking about the concept of JOY…   and how it fits with showing up Fashionably LATE to your best life.

What is JOY?

It’s been defined as an emotion, such as the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; in other words – elation.

Or the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires,

It’s also been defined as a STATE – such as a state of happiness or felicity

It’s been defined as a source or cause of delight

And it is also defined as the expression of or display of elation, delight or glad feelings.

So you can think of joy as an emotion that comes and goes quickly,

You can think of it as a state, which in my mind equates to something a little more lasting than a fleeting emotion,

And you can think of joy as an outward expression of that emotion or state of being joyful.

This last seems to indicate that you...
