The Artist in You!

Hello, Beautiful! Welcome to Fashionably LATE with Danne Reed.

When a soon-to-be or empty-nest mom decides it’s a great time for her to reinvent or to revive her dreams, she usually finds passion, purpose and fun in one of 4 ways.

She revives her dreams of being…

  • An artist
  • A champion
  • An entrepreneur, or
  • An adventurer

And sometimes, all of the above.

Today, I’m sharing the Artist model of Reinvention.

The Artist model of reinvention is all about: Creativity!

If this is you, you have creative talents that have been lying dormant for many years because you’ve been so busy raising your family.

Maybe you enjoyed…

  • Crafting
  • Painting
  • Playing the piano
  • Quilting
  • Gardening
  • Writing
  • Photography
  • Decorating your home
  • Dancing

Whether you wanted to do it as a hobby or as a career, odds are you set it aside because it felt frivolous, or self-indulgent, or you truly were too. Dang. Busy.

But here’s what you really need to know…

Whatever creative outlet it was that spoke to you, it was and IS a powerful part of who you ARE.

When these little dreams get lost along the way, when we set them aside because there’s too much laundry to keep up with and the kids need to be taken to soccer practice…

A little piece of US gets lost with it.

This is where that feeling that something’s missing often comes from.

We give these things up because when the kids come along, THEY become our priority.

But when they get a little older, and we have a little bit breathing room in our day, we notice the holes in our own fulfillment, our own unique pursuits (outside of being a mom).

Sometimes we even stop doing these things because we were told, or we told ourselves, that we weren’t any good at it.

I LOVED singing when I was a kid. But getting passed over for a major part in my 8th grade musical started me on a story that I wasn’t any good at it, so I quit singing, and avoided all opportunities to get better at it. To this day, watching someone unashamedly belting out their voice on a stage, still has the power to bring tears to my eyes. It’s not lost on me that it’s because I stifled that passion in myself.

So, what has the power to give you goosebumps or bring you to tears?

  • Is it seeing a beautiful painting?
  • Hearing someone play a haunting melody on the piano?
  • Reading an inspiring article or book?

It’s time to pay attention.

That IS your spirit giving you a wink.

That IS your true self trying to get your attention.

That IS your creative nature trying to nudge you into action, to revive that dream.

It’s time to rediscover that joy of creation.

It’s time to bring that Artist in you back to life!

So here’s a practical tip for you…

  1. Grab a journal or piece of paper and fill in the blank on this statement 5 times… “If I were to honor the Artist that is in me, I would…"
  2. Write the first 5 things that come to mind.
    • They might be small things like, “Spend 10 minutes researching available training classes.”
    • Or big things like “finally write that novel I’ve been dreaming about.”
  3. Whether big or small, give yourself the gift of taking one action within the next 7 days to bring that dream back to life.

For a little inspiration, think of something creative that your child has done or still does, something that they found joy in doing.

Now consider how old you’d like them to be when they give it up, never to enjoy that hobby again.

If your answer is never, that you never want them to stop doing it, give yourself this same grace that you’re giving your child.

It’s a gift that the child within you is still waiting to receive.

It’s time to honor and celebrate the Artist in YOU.

See you in the next episode!
