Staying vibrant and energetic is as much about your mindset as it is about the physical condition you’re in.
But have you ever stopped to think what EXACTLY it means to have an attitude or energy of youthfulness?
There are 7 characteristics of a Youthful Mindset. The more you can develop each of these characteristics, the more vibrant, energetic, fulfilled and happy you will feel.
In previous episodes, I’ve shared the first 4 traits and those are – Optimism, Curiosity, Openness and Creativity.
Today, I’m sharing trait #5, and that’s Innovation.
Innovation, in this sense, simply means that you’re consistently seeking new and better ways to do things. Innovation, combined with Optimism, is the key to every quality of life improvement we’ve ever had.
It’s been defined as the “successful exploitation of new ideas”.
It’s more than just coming up with the new idea; Innovation requires practical application of the idea.
So I want you to think of innovation as a youthful way of looking at the world -- to think “innovatively” about your health, your finances, your career, your relationships… even the organization of your home can benefit from innovative thinking.
What fresh, new ideas can you apply to your health? Is there a new meal delivery service available in your area that you’ve been wanting to try? Or a new fitness app you could put on your phone?
Could your finances benefit from innovative thinking? Are there technologies you haven’t yet applied to make it easier to pay your bills or track your spending?
Could your work or your career benefit from learning a new skill or innovating a time-consuming process?
Could your relationships benefit from some fresh new ways to connect? Like, a backyard picnic for date night instead of going out to dinner?
So, applying innovation to all areas of your life is a youthful way to live.
To illustrate the point, consider the opposite.
How would a person live their life if they NEVER thought innovatively? If they looked at what they have in their life and thought, “this will never get better. Might as well not even try.”
A person who thinks that way will seem old in no time at all. And what’s more… if you’re not growing or improving, you’re sliding backwards. Nothing in life stays the same.
So endeavor to be Innovative… to think innovatively in ALL areas of your life.
Like the trait of Creativity, Innovation is about connecting two or more ideas that weren’t previously connected. For example, I created an online platform a few years ago by combining the concept of the online marketplace like Etsy, with the coaching industry. And came up with an online marketplace for finding your perfect coach.
Keeping your mind open to innovative ideas can yield helpful changes in your life, both big and small.
Here’s a practical tip for enhancing your inner-Innovator:
I keep a running list of ideas in the notes app on my phone, and make it a daily habit to add at least one fresh idea each day. They might be blog ideas, or ideas for products, or business ideas, or even simple ways to organize my shoes.
And anytime I’m feeling stuck or uninspired, I refer to that list. From there, I’ll either get a new inspiration, or decide to implement one that I’ve already listed.
It’s like an ever-expanded list of ways to make my life, or the lives of others, better.
Try it for a week and see how your ability to think innovatively expands and improves. Who knows – the next big thing in technology or gardening or real estate development might be right there, waiting for you to connect the dots.
